Wireless Heterogeneous Networks and Next Generation Internet
The recent advances in wireless access technologies as well as the increasing number of mobile applications have made Wireless Internet a reality. A wide variety of bandwidth demanding services including high speed data delivery and multimedia communication have been materialized through the convergence of the next generation Internet and heterogeneous wireless networks. However, providing even higher bandwidth and richer applications necessitates a fundamental understanding of wireless Internet architecture and the interactions between heterogeneous users. Consequently, fundamental advances in many concepts of the wireless Internet are required for the ultimate goal of communication anytime anywhere.
This special issue of the ACM Mobile Networks and Applications Journal is dedicated to the recent advances in the area of Wireless Internet. We accepted 10 papers out of 59 submissions from all over the world with a 17% acceptance rate. Papers describing management schemes, protocols, models, evaluation methods, and experimental studies of Wireless Internet are included in this special issue to provide a broad view of recent advances in this field
Linear Block Coding for Efficient Beam Discovery in Millimeter Wave Communication Networks
The surge in mobile broadband data demands is expected to surpass the
available spectrum capacity below 6 GHz. This expectation has prompted the
exploration of millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency bands as a candidate
technology for next generation wireless networks. However, numerous challenges
to deploying mm-wave communication systems, including channel estimation, need
to be met before practical deployments are possible. This work addresses the
mm-wave channel estimation problem and treats it as a beam discovery problem in
which locating beams with strong path reflectors is analogous to locating
errors in linear block codes. We show that a significantly small number of
measurements (compared to the original dimensions of the channel matrix) is
sufficient to reliably estimate the channel. We also show that this can be
achieved using a simple and energy-efficient transceiver architecture.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of IEEE INFOCOM '1
Maximizing System Throughput Using Cooperative Sensing in Multi-Channel Cognitive Radio Networks
In Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), unlicensed users are allowed to access
the licensed spectrum when it is not currently being used by primary users
(PUs). In this paper, we study the throughput maximization problem for a
multi-channel CRN where each SU can only sense a limited number of channels. We
show that this problem is strongly NP-hard, and propose an approximation
algorithm with a factor at least where is a system
parameter reflecting the sensing capability of SUs across channels and their
sensing budgets. This performance guarantee is achieved by exploiting a nice
structural property of the objective function and constructing a particular
matching. Our numerical results demonstrate the advantage of our algorithm
compared with both a random and a greedy sensing assignment algorithm
